As part of its most recent earnings report, Take-Two Interactive noted that WWE 2K22 outperforms its recent predecessors.
“Remarkably, WWE 2K22’s sell-out for the first four weeks exceeded levels achieved for both WWE 2K19 and WWE 2K20, even with a revised non-holiday release window,” notes Take Two.
WWE 2K20 got off to a rocky start. Gamers and critics have panned the title for its sparse content and numerous bugs. It was the first entry in the annual series developed exclusively by Visual Concepts. Yuke’s had worked on WWE games for 18 years before leaving the brand after WWE 2K19.
This transition created growing pains for Take-Two. After the negative reception of WWE 2K20, the publisher decided to take more time with its next big wrestling game. This strategy has paid off as WWE 2K22 is selling well and receiving a warmer response from fans.
Meanwhile, Yuke’s is working on a wrestling game for AEW. The game, titled Fight Forever, is slated for release later this year.
