Oracle makes industrial-grade databases, servers, and storage devices that are among the fastest and most resilient in the industry, but don’t necessarily have all the features users are now looking for.
Enter six-year-old startup Rockset, which built a real-time analytics platform for cloud apps, including those from Oracle. The San Mateo, California-based startup on June 1 announced a new integration with the database giant that it claims will allow developers to perform real-time searches, aggregations, and “joins” on data from Oracle databases.
A growing number of companies are investing in real-time analytics as the basis for their digital upgrades, particularly in areas such as e-commerce, logistics and delivery tracking, fraud detection systems, health and fitness trackers, and recommendation engines.
While Oracle databases have become easier to use in recent years as the company moved its operational base to the cloud, they have never been easier to use and maintain. The use of analytics on the databases was a particularly challenging area of responsibility for a long time.
“Companies looking to use data from their Oracle databases for human-centric analytics have traditionally relied on read replicas that were too expensive or loaded into warehouses that were too slow,” said Shruti Bhat, Rockset’s chief product officer, in a press release. “Rockset now ingests real-time change data capture (CDC) streams from Oracle and indexes each field to enable low-latency, high-concurrency analytics without the complexity of traditional approaches.”
As the IT world moves from batch to real-time analytics, this release Bhat enables developers using Oracle to:
- Run analytical queries in a fraction of a secondincluding links to other databases, lakes or event streams;
- Achieve better database performance by isolating analytical queries on Rockset, which in turn scales horizontally in the cloud; and
- Operate fast microservices Use developer SDKs or deliver real-time reports using one of Rockset’s integrations with visualization tools including Tableau, Retool, Redash, and Superset.
Rockset CEO Venkat Venkataramani told VentureBeat that these connections are not provided by APIs, but are fully managed cloud service entities.
“So let’s say you manage your System of Record database, which happens to be MySQL, Postgres, MongoDB, or whatever,” Venkataramani said. “You create an account with Rockset. You point us to your MongoDB database and we have built-in connectors that ensure we replicate the data from your model to Rockset in real-time. You don’t have to lift a finger; You don’t have to write any code. And that data will lag a second or two behind the source of truth. This applies to all your operational databases. This also applies to Kafka and Kinesis and all data streams that they process and collect.
“And that’s also true if you happen to be accumulating data in your lake, whether it’s S3, GCS, or whatever. And so we have integrated connectors from all these sources at the touch of a button. When you bring the data into Rockset, it automatically indexes the data into fast SQL tables. And we have a full-featured SQL engine on top.”
Rockset was founded and built by the team behind the online data infrastructure that powers the Facebook (meta) news feed and search. Rockset is inspired by the same indexing systems that enable real-time analytics at cloud scale, Venkataramani said.
Because new data is ingested in real time, Rockset enables continuous transformations and rollups without the need for batch ETL jobs. The data is automatically indexed in a converged index that enables fast search, aggregation, and linking of real-time data with cloud-native speed and scalability, Venkataramani said.
