A new report from Canonical highlights the growth of hybrid cloud and multi-cloud solutions, with more than 83% of respondents saying they use either hybrid or multi-cloud. In the last year alone, the proportion of respondents not using hybrid or multi-cloud fell from 22.4% to 16.4%.
Meanwhile, security has repeatedly been cited as a priority for Kubernetes and cloud native technology. Only 13.6% of respondents believed they had mastered security and compliance, and for 37.8% of respondents, “How secure is this thing” was a priority when it came to cloud native technologies – versus 25.5% the optimization of resource use followed by a long way in second place. When asked about the top three factors when choosing a base image of a container image, the top three responses highlighted security and stability: 55.1% wanted images that had passed vulnerability and malware scans, 39 1% emphasized compliance and 38.9% prioritized a version with long-term support.
Relevant skills are still in high demand – 48% of respondents cited a lack of in-house skills as the biggest challenge when migrating to containers, and as operations continue to become more automated, finding a safe place to deploy the more importantly, expert commentators will discuss the possibilities for a trusted “app store” for operators.
On a lighter note, the focus on stability might have influenced one of the most interesting stats. “Our intern” was identified as the cloud infrastructure manager by just 5.6% of the companies surveyed in the 2022 report, up from 7.9% in 2021.
Canonical’s report is based on nearly 1,300 responses to an online survey published in November 2021 following KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America.
