Today, KMC banned the use of plastic in Kolkata and distributed jute sacks to vendors at Ramlal Bazar in Kasba, urging vendors to switch to jute sacks or use plastic bags over 75 microns.
Kolkata, the state capital of West Bengal, has decided to ban the use of thin single-use plastic below 75 microns. Kolkata Municipal Corporation came to Kasba and distributed jute sacks at Ramlal Bazar in Kasba and requested all traders to use jute sacks instead of plastic sacks.
The plastic bags clogged the drain and also polluted the environment. Plastic bags are absolutely unhygienic. It also affects dangerous pollution from the seabed, leading to an increase in sea surface temperature. This is also the reason for extreme weather changes.
The Municipal Corporation told vendors that plastic bags should be at least 75 microns thick and that thin plastic bags are best. Violators should also be punished.
The plastic ban was implemented in the country on October 1, 2021. The authorities are working on that now. Naba Dutta, the general secretary of Sbuj Manch, an organization for environmental groups, said coercion alone may not be effective. We already sell jute and cloth bags in the market, but people still use plastic. If the plastic bags are not good sources in manufacturing units, the ban will be of no use. We have already announced in the market areas that we will no longer use plastic carrier bags and instead use bags thicker than 75 microns. We have also told manufacturers not to make individual plastic bags. Inadmissibility is not permitted and any violation will be punished. An environmental official said:
