The Summer Gaming Brouhaha is officially upon us. Following last week’s State of Play, this week we’re moving on to the Summer Game Fest and accompanying Conga series of smaller shows. This will eventually culminate in the Xbox Showcase on Sunday. The Summer Game Fest that kicked off yesterday featured some fun game reveals, but . . . Well, you might have noticed a pattern. I definitely have.
For who knows what reason, the Summer Game Fest was absolute lousy with space-based sci-fi horror titles. These include Aliens: The Dark Descent, The Callisto Protocol, Fort Solis, and Routine. Apparently several game developers collectively became nostalgic for Dead Space/Alien Isolation/System Shock a few years ago. In the non-space horror section, we also saw the reveal of Layers of Fears, the Bloober team’s new project – not exactly the remake of Silent Hill 2 that everyone thought they were working on, but oh well.
We also checked out The Last of Us Remake, which is actually called The Last of Us Part 1. The details of the game were accidentally revealed ahead of the big show, but we also did some comparison shots between the two titles. The environments and lighting look like they’ve received a modest but nice upgrade. As for the character models, I’m not sure the remake is really an upgrade. We’ve also seen titles like Goat Simulator 3, which was delighted with a trailer parodying the development hell-bound Dead Island 2. I also enjoyed watching Marvel’s Midnight Suns, and between him and Gotham Knights, October will be a celebration for comics fans.
I’ve spent some time playing with Boss Factory, the demo for the upcoming Saints Row. Announced at Summer Game Fest, it will allow players to test out the customization features and build their bosses ahead of the game’s August 23 launch. You can see the results above: I managed to make myself with some respect for reality because I wanted to personally bully the people of Santo Ileso. It’s a great customization tool, but of course only a small part of the whole game. I’m also playing the demo for the upcoming Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, but I’m keeping my thoughts on that to myself for now.
